Commencing August 2018, Chapman Elementary School enrolled its first kindergarten class in the Mandarin Immersion STEAM program. This exciting program is the first of its kind in the South Bay offering both English and Mandarin speaking students the opportunity to attain both Mandarin and English proficiency with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
Chapman Elementary Mandarin Immersion program is currently a 50/50 model within one class in which 50% of the instruction is in Mandarin for half the day and 50% English for the second half of the day. The maximum class size is 24 with a teacher and teaching assistant. This Mandarin Immersion K-5 program follows the same curriculum as other highly successful Mandarin Immersion programs in the district.
Students who participate in the program do not have to speak Mandarin. The program will teach students to speak, read, and write in Mandarin and English with a focus on STEAM. Chapman utilizes progressive learning techniques including Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) as well as differentiated instruction.
Chapman offers students use of electronic devices, reading time in the library, and time to enjoy nature by working in the campus garden while following and exceeding district standards. Students experience music, dance, and other classes on a rotating basis along with physical education. Chapman has a uniform policy but also participates in College Day along with other spirit activities.
Campus tours commence at 8:30am. For more information on the program, please RSVP for one of the scheduled tours at ChapmanMandarin@gmail.com
